Nine months ago, we shared a magical lunch. It transformed our average Friday into a memorable event, transporting us away from the gloomy grey of Portland to a sunny picnic blanket in France. Such is the power of savoring a beautifully prepared meal. We’ve been meaning to sing the praises of this sweet luncheonette spot ever since, and last week Remodelista beat us to it. No matter — the more recognition the better for our favorite midday spot in Portland: Måurice.
A petite interior with layered textures in white, Måurice is the quintessential French pastry luncheonette. Color and accents are provided not by decor but through the bright simplicity of the dishes.
The food stands out not only for its beautiful presentation, but by the love and attention evident in each delicious dish. Owner and head chef Kristen Murray honed her craft on both coasts as well as in France. Her Gallic experience is evident in every bite (especially the quiche).
Shannon first met Kristen when she was working alongside the legendary Robert Reynolds at Chef’s Studio. Together they mentored many of Portland’s best chefs who were lucky enough to pass through the school. Kristen is always ready with a kind word and a warm smile; it is her personality that adds the final touch of perfection to a truly delightful meal.
