Outdoor Spaces - Safety and Serenity

Spring and Summer 2020 - As the months have passed we all became quite adept at social distancing measures, taking walks with friends or sitting in backyards and parks to gain some semblance of normality. Socialization is proven to increase the health of our parasympathetic nervous systems and release comforting serotonin, known to effect our moods and reduce anxiety. We knew we needed people. In some way more than we had ever realized.

Fall and Winter 2020 - In March and April, it was one of the myriad of topics we began to discuss in our design studio. If this lasts how will we manage the inclement weather? How will we see friends, have meetings, eat meals together? Quickly our list became; outdoor coverage, roof structure, sail clothes, outdoor rated space heaters and blankets

Below is a selection of projects and products that we have been inspired by or sourced for one of our clients.

Shed roof structures have become very desired, essentially four posts, with an angled roof, they can be dressed up with finish details such as exterior grade curtains, benches and plants.

Sail cloth - anchored with 3 points

Sail cloth - anchored with 3 points

Sail cloths are a great solution for those who are not able to build a structure and need light outdoor protection. It’s important to note that most sail cloths are not waterproof but they will shed light rain/drizzle. Online tutorials for DIYers and vendors abound; can easily be found on Amazon, IKEA or occasionally through a local resource - in Portland, OR there is Wyckam Fabric Creations.

Outdoor Heating - this is the biggest challenge for many of our clients. With all of the forest fires, air pollution and general intensity of maintenance we do not recommend wood burning fire pits. Rather, we have focused on directional heat - either through gas or electric.

Standing patio heater - uses a propane tank and has wheels so it can be moved around the yard.

Comfort and Coziness

Comfort and Coziness

Outdoor Comfort - Inspired by the practices of the upscale ski lodges in Europe, and thinking on how to maintain social distances among friends during the colder winter months, we recommend having a selection of outdoor rated and warm blankets on hand. With a blanket provided for each guest, everyone can maintain comfort in place, rather than be tempted to crowd around the heatsource.

Outdoor blankets - we love the waterproof and fleece combo available at REI and the heavy classic wool versions at Pendleton.
